Tamworth Co-operative Funeral Service – helping families for generations to celebrate the lives of their loved ones

For decades Tamworth Co-operative Society’s comprehensive funeral service has been helping families to make the best possible arrangements for their relatives in a professional and caring way.

Our standing in the community is such that they know they can depend on us to support them through a difficult time in their lives.

In return for this trust, we ensure your loved one is treated with dignity and respect at all times from the moment we take them into our care at our funeral home in Upper Gungate.

We are proud to be part of Tamworth Co-operative Society, one of the last remaining fully independent co-operatives in the UK – and one of Tamworth’s most iconic organisations.

Our funeral division is often confused with the Co-op Group which has more than 1,000 funeral homes. We operate on a far smaller scale, with just six other branches in neighbouring areas.

Tamworth Co-operative Funeral Service has earned a reputation for being the first in the area to introduce a number of innovative services and funeral-related items. Our aim is to celebrate lives in line with people’s wishes, no matter how individual they are.

We don’t just focus on your loved one. Looking after you is equally important to us. This is why we opened a dedicated Bereavement Advice Centre for those finding it hard to cope with loss.

In 2016, the centre, which is run by trained advisers, was recognised for its outstanding work and contribution to the understanding of death in the national Good Funeral Awards.

The judges praised the work we do in the community to remove the taboo surrounding the subject of death and encourage open discussion. Our private and spacious catering suite was also singled out for praise.

Our annual Christmas carol and memorial service has become a main highlight in Tamworth's festive calendar with hundreds attending each year. It gives people a chance to light a candle in memory of a much loved relative or friend while at the same time welcoming in the spirit of Christmas. The huge sea of lit candles is an extremely moving sight.

We are rightfully proud of these achievements and of our historic roots in Tamworth, but we never rest on our laurels in striving to give our customers the best of the best.

Tamworth Co-operative Funeral Service is managed by one of the most respected and highly experienced funeral directors in the area.

General Manager Glen Speak is a former chairman of the British Institute of Embalmers' Midlands Division. Glen joined Tamworth Co-operative Society's funeral service as deputy manager, having previously been in charge of 15 Co-operative Group funeral branches in the Nottingham area. He manages a team of highly professional, caring and dedicated staff.

In recent years we have acquired a luxury fleet of Jaguar funeral cars made by a firm which has been supplying hearses to the Royal Family for many years.

Our premises, close to the town centre, have also been extensively refurbished since they were built a century ago to create a comfortable and restful environment.

For us it makes economic sense to invest in quality improvements which will last longer and therefore allow Tamworth Co-operative Funeral Service to maintain fair and reasonable prices.

This is a cause close to our hearts as a co-operative founded in 1886 on the principle of combining fair prices with high-quality goods and service.

We were one of the first funeral operators in the country to sign the Quaker Social Action Fair Funerals pledge. This reaffirmed our ongoing commitment to providing a transparent and affordable service.

Our funeral directors and arrangers have many years of experience and are genuinely sympathetic. They know what it means to lose someone special and will guide you through all the options.

If you want pomp and ceremony, we can provide a traditional horse-drawn hearse with a funeral director leading the way on foot. Others prefer something less formal.

Our themed funerals are becoming increasingly popular, with colourful coffins and motorcycle hearses among the vast choices available to personalise the service.

We can organise everything from a pink hearse to the release of white doves.

We also offer individual floral tributes in all colours and designs, along with numerous beautiful memorials built to withstand all conditions.
